COURSE OUTLINE - Calculus 1500A/B - Calculus I for the Mathematical Sciences, Sept-Dec 2019

Prerequisites: Ontario Secondary School MCV4U or Mathematics 0110A/B.

Antirequisites: Calculus 1000A/B, the former 1100A/B, Applied Mathematics 1413.

Instructor Information: Gord Sinnamon , Professor, Department of Mathematics.

Course Description: An enriched version of Calculus 1000A/B. Basic set theory and an introduction to mathematical rigour. The precise definition of limit. Derivatives of exponential, logarithmic, rational trigonometric functions. L'Hospital's rule. The definite integral. Fundamental theorem of Calculus. Integration by substitution. Applications.

Textbook: Single Variable Calculus: Early Transcendentals, Eighth Edition, by James Stewart, published by Nelson. It is available from the Bookstore in a bundle but only the text is required.

OWL: Students must check OWL (http://owl.uwo.ca) on a regular basis for course information.

Evaluation: Assignments 20%, Quizzes 40%, Final Examination 40%. No calculators or any other aids are allowed on quizzes and exams. Tentative assignment due dates: Sep 17, Sept 24, Oct 8, Oct 15, Oct 29, Nov 19, Dec 3. Tentative in-class quiz dates: Sep 13, Sept 27, Oct 18, Nov 1, Nov 22. No aids of any kind will be permitted during quizzes; cell phones must be silent and inaccessible.

Absences: If you miss or expect to miss an assignment or quiz, contact Gord Sinnamon as soon as possible. There is no need to seek approval from faculty counsellors as each assessment is worth less than 10% of your final mark. There will normally be no make-up assignments or quizzes; approved absences will result in re-weighting. If you miss or expect to miss the final examination, contact Gord Sinnamon and your faculty's Academic Counselling Office as soon as you are able to do so.
