Fundamental Concepts in Mathematics

Syllabus: This course is intended for students interested in pursuing a degree in one of the mathematical sciences. Topics include logic, set theory, relations, functions and operations, a careful study of the integers, discussion of the real and complex numbers, polynomials, and infinite sets.

 

Class time and location: MWF 1:30-2:30 in NCB-295.

Antirequisites: Mathematics 2155F/G, or the former Mathematics 2155A/B.

Prerequisites: One or more of Ontario Secondary School MCV4U, Mathematics 1600A/B.

Textbook: A Concise Introduction to Pure Mathematics, 4th edition, by Martin Liebeck, Chapman Hall/CRC Press.

Evaluation: Assignments (20%), Midterm Exam I (20%), Midterm Exam II (20%), Final Exam (40%).

Exam dates: The midterm exams will be held during normal class time on February 6 and March 13. The date of the final exam will be determined by the Registrar.

Missed assignments and exams: If you miss an assignment or exam due to medical or non-medical reasons, you must contact your facultyÕs Academic Counselling Office, as soon as possible, to apply for accommodation.  If accommodation is granted, the corresponding weight of the missed assignment or midterm exam will be added to the weight of your final exam.

Policies for assignments: All assignments are to be submitted at the beginning of class on their due date.  No late assignments will be accepted.
