Creating Polls

Adding a Poll

To add a poll, click Add at the top of the page. If you have no polls activated on your site, you will also have the option of adding a poll by clicking Add a poll on your screen. You will then be taken to a screen where you can set up your poll.


Poll Setup

On the poll setup screen there are several options.

  1. Type the question for the poll in the Question box.
  2. Add any additional instructions for answering the poll in the Text Editor window provided.
  3. Set an Opening Date and Closing Date for the poll. You can either type dates into the forms provided or click on the calendar icon to choose a date from the calendar
  4. Set the limits for the number of answers students can select in the poll.
  5. Set your settings for Result viewing by selecting one of the options.
    • To make results always viewable, select Always.
    • To make results visible to students who have voted and to all other students after the poll is closed, select to participants who have voted, and after closing date.
    • To hide results from all students until after the poll is closed, select after closing date.
    • To hide results from students, select Never.
  6. Click Save and add options to move to the next step.



A poll may only be voted in once. This includes cases where the student clicks Vote without having chosen an option, if the minimum answer limit is set to zero. For single-option polls, it is recommended that you leave the default limits of 1 and 1.

Adding options and publishing

After clicking Save and add options you will be taken to a screen with a text editor window.

  1. Type the text for your option in the text editor window.
  2. If you are adding more options, click Save and add options.
  3. When you are completely finished adding options, click Save.
  4. You will be taken back to the Poll Setup page where you are able to Edit or Delete options
  5. When your poll is finished, click Save and your poll will be published.



Viewing Results and Removing Polls

Viewing Poll Results

To view results for a poll:

  1. On the main page of the poll, click Results in the row for the poll you wish to view.
  2. The Results page will show the number of votes per option and the percentage of that vote. Please note that you will not be able to see who cast which vote as results are anonymous.



Removing polls

To remove a poll:

  1. Check off the box to the right of the poll you are going to remove.
  2. With the box(es) checked, click Delete Selected Items at the bottom. This will permanently remove the selected polls.


Changing Permissions

The Polls tool can allow students to create and edit their own polls. This ability can be enabled in Permissions.

Enabling student-created polls

To enable students to create their own polls:

  1. Click Permissions at the top of the tool.
  2. Check off the boxes under the Student Role to determine the level of student access.
  3. To save your settings, click Save.
